In these paintings, the scene is of limitless desert, rather than of mountain valleys. Several are identified by their artist-assigned titles as being in the lava beds of northern California, and others exhibit a similar topography. Some of the paintings depict tepees of Sioux design, which suggests a locale at the western edge of the Great Plains but tepees of that design were, by the 1880s, widely used by other tribes. Note that titles in brackets were not assigned by the artist, so where they name a tribe or location it may be just a guess.
