[photo] [Desert landscape with Indians and tepee 2]

Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 30 x 60 inches (76 x 152 cm)
Inscription: l/r "F.Schafer", underlined, in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand, but with a careful elegance that suggests that the artist was particularly proud of this work.
Verso: no inscription
Provenance: In private collection, Dublin, Ireland, received by gift in the early 1980s from a shipping family.
Citations: Personal communication with the collector, 2014
Site: Unidentified. The topography suggests the northern California lava beds, an area that is currently known as the Lava Beds National Monument.
Description: With the addition of a white horse in the background to the right and the subtraction of a saddle on the ground, the description of [Desert landscape with Indians and tepee I] would also apply to this painting.
Note: 1. The central part of this painting is nearly identical to the much smaller [Desert landscape with Indians and tepee I], which, being slightly simpler as well as less carefully drafted, may have been a preliminary study. 2. See the list of Indians in desert locales for several possibly related paintings.
Identification: Assigned, descriptive title.
In index(es): Title list, Indian encampments as primary subjects, Indians in desert locales
