Verso: l/r "Sunset on Mount Shasta.", in black brush on the canvas, in the artist's characteristic block lettering hand. "21" on the left side of the frame. An inscription giving partial provenance on the upper part of the frame.
Provenance: In collection of William Henry Henley, Oceanside, California, by 1912; to private collection, Kingman, Arizona, by descent in the family on April 19, 1912, again on May 9, 1969, and again on August 17, 1979.

Site: View of Mount Shasta, California, from the south, across the upper Sacramento River.
Note: The painting hung in the Hotel El San Luis Rey on Pacific Street in Oceanside, California until 1912.
Legend: According to family lore, William Henley acquired this painting from the (Amasa) Leland Stanford Estate, presumably between Stanford's death in 1893 and his wife Jane Lathrop Stanford's death in 1905. Documentation that might verify this legend has not been located.
