About paintings known only by title

Below is a list of painting titles that were mentioned in one or more (usually older) sources such as a nineteenth-century auction sale catalog or newspaper article. Each title is followed by a list of sources that mentioned that title.

Unfortunately, these sources provide little or no information beyond the title. Schafer painted popular scenes several times, typically giving paintings of the same scene the same title, so when different sources mention the same title there is usually no way to determine whether or not they refer to the same painting. For the same reason, identifying any of these titles with a currently known painting that lacks complete provenance is problematic. And although Schafer inscribed verso titles on many of his paintings, for the ones he did not title (and some that he did) dealers and collectors have assigned their own descriptive titles, making matching even more problematic. Finally, the titles themselves can be misleading, since catalog preparers and newspaper reporters are both notoriously bad at capturing exact title wording. In this list, titles with minor variations are merged, with notes describing the differences.

Considering these obstacles to identification, there is almost certainly a large but unknown overlap between these titles and the catalogued paintings.

For works that are fully catalogued, see the Other lists and indexes.

• California Landscape Painting, 1860–1885.
Note: Since the painting has not been located it is not known which spelling is correctly associated with it. It is also not known whether this is a painting of the port city of Mazatlan, on the west coast of Mexico, or of the German four-masted ship Mazatlan, a popular subject for artists in the late nineteenth century. (The use of the word "landscape" in the (San Francisco) The Illustrated Wasp report suggests that it is not a marine painting, but that word also suggests that it is not a city view.) The existence of this title has caused speculation and, more recently, a possibly accurate legend concerning Schafer's travels. See Legends and myths about Schafer and Travels of the artist for details.

• Lot 49 on page 9 of the catalog for a sale on 22 June 1909 in Victoria by H. W. Davies, M.A.A., & Sons, Auctioneers.
Note: The entire contents of Craigdarroch Castle in Victoria were sold at auction in 1909. The auction catalog lists eight paintings by Schafer; the painting titled "Moonlight on the Sound" was among the contents of the smoking room. Reksten, Terry, Craigdarroch: The Story of Dunsmuir Castle, 1987, page 41, suggests that Craigdarroch may have originally acquired this painting in a September 1891 auction (Vancouver Daily World, September 1891) held by Schafer in Vancouver, British Columbia. Since Craigdarroch Castle was built between 1887 and 1890 and despite the slight variation in title, it seems more likely that the Craigdarroch painting was acquired from the successful bidder in either the July 1885 sale in Victoria or the November 1885 sale in San Francisco, but no documentation of either conjecture has been located. According to Nesbitt in The Vancouver Sun article of 29 July 1970, in recent years some effort went into reacquiring as many of the auctioned paintings as possible. This is one of two paintings that remain unlocated.
Probable provenance: The artist; sold 2 or 3 July 1885 as auction lot 39 by W. R. Moore, Victoria, British Columbia, or sold 17 November 1885 as auction lot 6 by C. P. Troy, San Francisco; to an unknown bidder; sold circa 1891 to collection of Joan Olive (Mrs. Robert) Dunsmuir, Craigdarroch Castle, Victoria, British Columbia; by descent to her estate at her death in 1909; sold by H. W. Davies, M.A.A., & Sons, Auctioneers, 22 June 1909 as lot 49; currently unlocated.

• Lot 48 on page 9 of the catalog for a sale on 22 June 1909 in Victoria by H. W. Davies, M.A.A., & Sons, Auctioneers. Title as shown in the catalog, with quotation marks.
Note: (1) A mountain named Erwin does not appear in either modern or historical name guides to northern California. The name in the title might be a mistake for Mount Eddy, which is a few miles west of Mount Shasta, California.
(2) The 1987 book Reksten, Terry, Craigdarroch: The Story of Dunsmuir Castle on page 41 suggests that Craigdarroch may have originally acquired this painting in a September 1891 auction (Vancouver Daily World September 1891) held by Schafer in Vancouver, British Columbia, but no documentation to support this conjecture has been located. The entire contents of Craigdarroch were sold at auction in 1909. The auction catalog lists eight paintings by Schafer; this painting was among the contents of the smoking room. According to Nesbitt in an article in The Vancouver Sun of 29 July 1970, in recent years some effort went into reacquiring as many of the auctioned paintings as possible. This is one of two paintings that remain unlocated.
Provenance: In collection of Joan Olive (Mrs. Robert) Dunsmuir, Craigdarroch Castle, Victoria, British Columbia, by 1909; to her estate upon her death in 1909; with H. W. Davies, M.A.A., & Sons, Auctioneers, 22 June 1909.
