Attribution: | The painting appears to be a field sketch, which makes it difficult to analyze. Its style is not at all similar to most work by Schafer and the palette is unusual. The water does not flow naturally, and the perspective of the road on the right side seems unnatural, both of which are usually sketched well in Schafer's work. |
Note: | The title is puzzling, because the Shepherds Pass in California is a stony area high in the Sierras that is devoid of vegetation and lacking any nearby streams or road, much less an engineered and graceful bridge. |
Identification: | Title from reported verso inscription. |
