Medium: Watercolor on artist's board.
Size: 3 x 5 in (3 x 13 cm)
Inscription: Signed l/r, visible but not legible in the available photograph.
Verso: Identified l/c "F. Schäfer & Son / Scenic Painters / address 1603 Benton Street / Alameda California" in cursive script, probably in the artist's hand, using a brown pen. u/c "1/2 ox126 Art 15¢" in a different script using a black pen. Numbered l/l "830Y" in pencil.
Provenance: Found in an unidentified antique shop, San Anselmo, California, 1985; sold to private collection, New Hampshire in 1985.
Citations: Personal communication
Note: (1) The verso inscription provides a clue as to the date of the painting. The address given in the inscription was that of Schafer's home and studio from 1886 through 1904 and city directories dated during the years 1896 to 1904 list his son Otto as a "scenic artist". The painting was probably executed during those years. (2) This painting was accompanied by a second watercolor of the same size, [Mountain lake 1 (Lake Tahoe?)].
Identification: Assigned, descriptive title.
In index(es): Title list, unusual subjects--still life, cityscapes, winter scenes, watercolor and gouache paintings
