Description: | A blue lagoon with a white sailboat on the far side. Two palms stand at the right, reaching to the top of the painting; the area below them is filled with ferns and jungle foliage. The horizon is colored sunset orange, coloring the far edge of the lagoon. The sky shade changes to blue at the top. A beige rock stands in the lower right corner. (From a color photograph.) |
Note: | This painting is one of several tropical scenes by Schafer, which were probably prepared to satisfy a demand for such paintings from San Francisco residents who came from the east via a Central American overland route. |
Identification: | Descriptive title of unknown origin, as used in the three sale catalogs. The two sales are assumed to be of the same painting based on the identical title and size, and the failure of the first sale. The Early California and Western Art Research index identifies the slide with the 25 April 1985 sale and with the 1987 offering at Kral. |
