Attribution: Although this painting has a typical composition, palette, and signature for Schafer, it is unusual in that there is no staffage, the illumination is relatively uniform rather than having a central focus and there are no standing, leaning, or fallen snags and no apparent debris.
Site: Mount Shasta, viewed from the west, through an unidentified river valley.
Description: A rather roughly sketched view of the mountain through a river valley that has little detail, especially in the farther reaches. A stratovolcano with a secondary cone on the left stands in the center without quite dominating the painting against a mostly cloudy sky tinged with pink. The cap of the mountain is bare rock, with snow-covered rock below, especially on the left (North) side. The river is in the right center; the left bank a moderate slope cluttered with several large boulders; farther up the slope five conifers are tall enough to be silhouetted against the sky, the advance guard of a forest beyond. Wildflowers dot the nearest parts of the slope. The right bank is much steeper, rising quickly past a few trees to a steep cliff. Intermediate ranges appear in the hazy distance. (From the painting, 6 December 1998)
Identification: Descriptive title from sale catalog.
