Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 30 x 20 in (76 x 51 cm)

Reproductions: William K. Dick photo #139 (color, 1971)
Citations: Inventory of American Paintings… record 71063282; William K. Dick notes, page 70
Site: A view from the valley floor, across a river, of the Three Brothers, a rock formation in Yosemite Valley, California.
Description: A large, grey rock formation with a succession of three promontories stands on the left against a blue sky with white clouds. In the distance, on the right horizon, is a ridge of hazy bluish cliffs. In the middle distance, across the river, stands an Indian encampment with three tepees, beyond which is a green forest. On near bank at the left are four tall evergeens standing above some brush and wildflowers. A black snag sticks out from the shore into the water. The entire painting is drawn in coarse brushstrokes. (From a color photograph.)
Note: The 1861 C. E. Watkins photograph of this scene is from a different vantage point. [Naef, Weston J., Era of Exploration, plate 5.]
Identification: Descriptive title of unknown origin, as reported in the Inventory of American Paintings. A note on the back of the photograph mentions "Dr. Evans of SCP," presumably referring to Dr. Elliott Evans, who at the time was associated with the Society of California Pioneers.
