[photo] Foggy morning in the Catskills
Photo credit: William K. Dick, 1971
Date: probably undated
Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 30 x 20 in (76 x 51 cm)
Inscription: l/r "FS…" initials appear to be conjoined in a monogram, remainder illegible in the photograph
Verso: said to be "Fogy morning in the Catskills"
Provenance: In private collection by 1971.
Reproductions: William K. Dick photo #115 (color, 1971)
Description: A stroller, wearing a hat, carrying a walking stick, and with only one leg visible, stands in the distance on a straight dirt road that is lined with tall trees. The sun, off the canvas to the right, strikes the trunks of two tall trees on the right, a light green clearing, and the part of the road where the stroller stands. On the left, two dead trees, one brown and one white, appear ready to fall over the road. In the shadowed left foreground grow colorful wildflowers. Beyond the stroller, through the haze, looms a small, rocky brown cliff. The sky and distant forest are white with a thin fog. (From a color photograph.)
Note: See the list of forest path scenes for several other works of similar composition.
Identification: The unusual spelling of "foggy" in the inscription comes from a note on the back of the photo from William K. Dick.
