Provenance: Said to be sold by the artist to King Ludwig of Bavaria by 1886 (see Legend); by gift to Jacob Schienle, Munich and New York City; by descent to private collection, Scottsdale, Arizona, by 2005; Offered in 2006 by Braarud Fine Art.

Legend: The first line of the provenance is not documented. Jacob Schienle is said to have been King Ludwig's personal physician. When he left the king's service to come to America the king offered him three of his Schafer paintings and Schienle took the three with American subject matter, of which this is one.
