Several small- and medium-size, roughly-finished oil and watercolor paintings apparently signed by Schafer are known. In contrast with the larger studio paintings, some of them have a uniform illumination and lack a central focus. These paintings seem to be sketches, perhaps in some cases made in the field. Most of them bear a signature consisting of block-printed letters but the letters are composed with much more rounded strokes than in the signatures found on the studio paintings. These differences lead to an attribution concern: any individual sketch may be

by Schafer and signed by him
by Schafer and signed by his son Otto
by Schafer and signed by someone else
by his son Otto but signed to appear they are by Schafer
by Schafer's "copycat" (see "A copycat and a sidearm" in Legends and myths about Schafer)
by someone else seeking to cash in on Schafer's work

Thus whether each of these paintings is an authentic work by Schafer is open to question.
