[photo] Carmelo Bay, Monterey, California (sketch)
Medium: oil on artist's board
Size: 6.5 x 11.2 in (16.5 x 28.5 cm)
Inscription: l/l, the letters "F" and "S" conjoined in a monogram
Verso: "Carmello Bay / Monterey Cal" in pencil in an unknown script hand
Provenance: In private collection, West Virginia, 2009.
Citations: Personal communication with the owner, 2009.
Attribution: The composition, brushwork, palette, and similarity to other paintings of Carmel and Monterey Bays by Schafer (Carmelo Bay near Monterey, California, [Coast near Monterey], [Cypress Point, Monterey 2], and Midway Point, Monterey) all suggest that this work is by him. However, the signature consisting of just a monogram is unique. In addition, the monogram is constructed with a different set of strokes when compared with monograms used as part of Schafer's full signature appearing on other paintings.
Site: Between Monterey and Carmel, California, probably just south of Cypress point.
Note: 1. An oil sketch. 2. Acquired at an unidentified country auction.
Identification: Title from verso inscription of unknown origin, modified for uniform spelling and punctuation.
In index(es): Title list, coastal and marine scenes, sketches
