Citations: Inventory of American Paintings… record 61140195
Description: An eastern forest scene with much clutter. A stream tumbles down between rocks toward the viewer. A large gnarled, almost leafless, tree grows out over the stream and up. White birch trees on both banks brighten the scene, which is mostly in shades of brown. The painting is completely filled--only a small patch of cloudy sky is visible near the top center, with a dimly seen mountain at the right of the valley in the far background. Unusually detailed in that the kinds of trees can almost be identified from the shapes of their leaves. (From a color photograph.)
Legend: When shown at Witherspoon, a wall card reported that the picture was from the Phoebe Hearst Gymnasium at the University of California, Berkeley.
Identification: Descriptive title of unknown origin, as reported by the Witherspoon Galleries to the Inventory of American Painting. The Early California and Western Art Research index identifies the slide with the Witherspoon offering and gives the size as approx 4 x 3 feet. The date reported by Witherspoon may come from an unmentioned inscription that is also not visible in either photograph. The photograph by William K. Dick gives the size as 40 x 30 in and confirms the 1880 date.
In index(es): Title list, Barbizon-style forest interiors, eastern United States scenes, mountain streams through a forest, dated paintings
