Inscription: Signed l/r "F. Schafer." in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand.
An identification plaque on the lower frame edge reads:
   "Sailboats at Sunset", Near Golden Gate
       Frederic F. Schafer (1839 - 1927)
Verso: On the frame u/c, a black circular dealer's label with stenciled printing that reads "CECILIA SCHIEWECK / PAINTINGS / MILWAUKEE" in an oval with old english letters "C" above and "S" below.
Provenance: "Private collection, Orinda, CA; by family descent"; sold 18 November 2025 for $1848 by John Moran Auctioneers, Inc., Monrovia, California, as lot 48 in "California & American Art" sale 324.
