Attribution: | The painting is unsigned, so attribution must be made by other characteristics. There are four other paintings by Frederick Schafer of this same scene. All have the same general composition, the same palette, and many of the same details in the same positions, for example the broken mast on the shore, a ship in the distance, and sea gulls in the air. In addition, the verso inscription is in the distinctive lettering hand of Schafer. |

Note: | A sticker of the Davie Art Shop is affixed to the back of the frame. That shop was at the address on the sticker from 1949 to 1979, suggesting that the reframing was done around 1949. |
