Reproductions: | Clar's Auction Gallery 10 September 2006 sale catalog. |
Attribution: | Although the painting bears the inscription "Hill", attribution to Thomas Hill has been questioned. The general composition and palette, highly detailed dark foreground, use of light to focus attention on the nearby rock formation, botanically accurate ivy and trees, much less distinct background, layered brushwork, and the elaborate reported title all suggest that the painting may be attributable to Frederick F. Schafer. |
Site: | Yosemite Valley, looking east with the Merced River below, El Capitan on the left, and Cathedral Rocks on the right. |
Note: | The very light recto inscription "Hill" is encircled by a dark halo. |
Identification: | At the time of the Clars sale, a piece of paper of unknown origin was tucked into the back of the frame with the pencilled note "on the reverse, before lining: / MORNING ON THE MOONLIGHT ROCK / YOSEMITE VALLEY". |
