Site: | A view to the northeast of Black Butte and Mount Shasta from a viewpoint in a meadow about 4 miles west of the Strawberry Valley Stage Station. |
Note: | 1. Strawberry Valley is an early name for the modern town of Mount Shasta City. Although the name of the town was changed to "Sisson" in 1886, the older name probably continued to be used for many years, so the title does not help to precisely date the painting. 2. The Black Butte, Shasta in distance, from Sissons, California and Mount Shasta [9] are very similar scenes of Black Butte and Mount Shasta, viewed from the same meadow. Sunset on Mount Shasta from Sissons, California (attributed) is from from Sisson's Hotel in the center of Strawberry Valley, a viewpoint just far enough to the east that Black Butte is not in the picture. |
