Note: | 1. The title is puzzling. Mount Rainier is not visible from any point along the Columbia River. The rounded top of the higher peak does resemble the profile of Mount Rainier, but the secondary peak in the painting, presumably Mount Tahoma, is much larger than life size. The painting may be a composite, constructed in the studio from sketches of the Columbia river and of Mount Rainier. 2. A painting with the same title was offered as lot 56 in the catalog of a May 1886 exhibition and auction sale in Salt Lake City, Utah Territory, but the information in that catalog is insufficient to either include or exclude the possibility that it is this painting. |
