| Site: | Standing on the North (Washington) side of the Columbia River looking West across the river into Oregon, toward Beacon Rock. The geographic feature in the painting was named "Beacon Rock" by Lewis and Clark in 1805, but it was known as "Castle Rock" from 1811 until 1916, when the United States Board of Geographic Names restored the "Beacon Rock" name. | Description: | Beacon rock is silhouetted against distnat and hazy low mountains and the sky with trees`visible on its top and on a ledge on its left side. On the near side of the river two broadleaf trees stand just above boulders on a bank partly covered with low vegetation; dense broadleaf forest lies beyond. In contrast, a conifer forest lines the far bank with only a few broadleaf trees visible. The river covers the entire front edge of the painting except for a small part at the left. The sky is blue with a few wispy, orange-to-pink clouds. (From a color photograph.) |
