Attribution: | In the 11 June 2003 sale, the painting is unattributed, being identified simply as "American School, 19th/20th century". The style, appearance, composition, and palette all suggest that the painting may be by Schafer. |
Description: | A hazy, distant snowcapped mountain ridge, a greyish intermediate range, a steep stony cliff on the right above the lake, a brown lake shore on the right in the middle distance with a white rock at the water's edge. Several brown rocks standing in the water, A brown forest on the left with four trees silhouetted against the hazy, cloudless, blue sky. several dead trees lie among the rocks, two hang out over the water and two others lean in the distance. Small patches of grass grow in the water near the rocks. The water is almost mirror-smooth and it reflects the rocks, banks, and the stony cliff. (From a color photograph.) |
