Site: | Appears to be Lassen Peak, California, before that volcano erupted in 1914 and 1915. |
Description: | A massive, flat-topped, snow-covered peak stands in the center against a saturated blue-green sky. A few clouds, as well as much of the peak, is colored coral by the sun off the canvas at the left. In front of the peak is a series of low ridges and a valley with a stream far below on the right. The lower left triangle is a grey foreground bank high above the stream; in the center is a prominent white boulder amidst several other rocks. The trunk of a fallen tree fills the line of the trinagle. Above the boulder and farther away is a grove of conifers, two of which stand to the sky to the left of the peak. The trees of the grove are simply shapes of color, with minimal use of line. (From the painting, 9 December 1989.) |
