| Site: | Mount Shasta, viewed from the South, with Shastina on the left. |
| Description: | Two brightly-dressed Indians on horseback ride away from the viewer between two white boulders along a trail to the left of a bright blue river or lake, which enters near the center and fills the right front corner of the painting. In the distance, snow-capped Mount Shasta rises above the haze and clouds against a greyish-blue sky with indistinct clouds. The left lower triangle is crossed by the bright path; the grass in the foreground among the boulders is shadowed in greys and browns. Beyond the path a tree trunk lies across the boulders; at the far left stands a snag, bare, and in the middle distance are two leaning snags. In the background on the left a rocky, brown cliff rises higher than the top of the mountain peak. A dead branch lies across a boulder at the water's edge. The far side of the river, on the right, is heavily forested. The landscape is mostly in shades of brown. (From a color photograph.) |
