Site: | Looking East across the Merced River toward El Capitan from the bottom of Yosemite Valley, California. |
Description: | El Capitan is an undetailed, outline extending from the top left out to the center of the painting, where it abruptly drops to the river which occupies the bottom right and foreground. Similarly undetailed is the forest on the lower slope of El Capitan and the valley beyond, on the right. On the left bank of the river, in front of a more detailed grove of conifers, is an Indian camp with tepees, and a figure standing on the sandy bank near a point. The sky is cloudy. A dead tree leans nearby on the left, and the river reflects even more indistinctly the slopes and forest above. (From a monochrome photograph.) |
Identification: | Descriptive title of unknown origin, from the 1987 sale catalog. The sale catalog suggests that further provenance information is available. |
