| Attribution: | The Michaan's Auctions by the Bay, Inc. sale catalog lists the painting as "Att. to F. Schafer". The attribution is probably based on superficial similarity to a half-dozen tropical scenes by Schafer. However, several other San Francisco area artists also painted similar scenes, as shown in the 1971 exhibition Tropical Scenes by the 19th Century Painters of California. This painting differs from Schafer's other tropical paintings, and also from all other Schafer paintings, in that the image does not cover the entire canvas. In addition, the overall style of the painting does not resemble Schafer's usual work. |
