Attribution: Although there are at least two artists (one British, the other from New England) who sign their paintings "T. Hall" using block-printed letters similar to the signature found on this painting, the appearance as well as the Yosemite Valley subject have led to the suggestion that it might actually be by Frederick Schafer. There are several dozen known paintings of this site by Schafer. Although the known Yosemite paintings display typical artistic variation, this painting is so dissimilar when compared with the others that the suggestion is questionable. Bridalveil Fall appears as if done by someone who has never visited the site; the foam at the bottom (normally hidden by trees) seems to extend a hundred feet high; the hanging valley above the cliff top is missing, and one of the Cathedral rocks is missing. The style of the midground and of the nearer cliffs is quite detailed, not usual for Schafer paintings. For these reasons, it is not likely that this painting is by Frederick Schafer.
Description: A waterfall flows over a grey cliff on the right, falling to the valley floor in a burst of foam. Behind the cliff juts a small peak; on the left is a grey el capitan. At the edge of the river flowing across the center of the painting stand two figures. the river is surrounded with low conifers; on the left is autumn-colored foliage, while on the right a small greenish bush stands amidst a rock outcrop. Two or three trees on the right stand in silhouette against the rocky canyon wall. (From a color photograph.)
Identification: Descriptive title of unknown origin.
