Attribution: | Open to question. While the composition is typical, the style is somewhat unusual for Schafer. The stratovolcano is unusually detailed, the sky includes detailed clouds, and the foreground is devoid of the usual snags and wildflowers. The canvas size and the rounded sketch hand of the signature are also unusual. Further analysis is warranted. |
Description: | A snowcovered stratovolcano in the center is viewed through a steep valley with a river bottom at the right. The sky appears to be cloud-filled. The foreground hillside on the left is largely clear, with low brush and rocks and a prominent boulder near the left front. The more distant parts of the valley on both sides are forested. Although a few trees stand on the other side of the foreground clearing, none are particularly prominent. (From a color photograph.) |
