[photo] Old Woolen Mill in the Catskills, New York
Date: See Note 1.
Medium: Oil on canvas.
Size: 22 x 16 inches (56 x 41 cm)
Inscription: Signed "F Schäfer" in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand, faintly underlined, umlaut resembles a circumflex.
Verso: Titled l/c "Old Woolen mill / in the Catskills N Y" in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand. The word "Old" is slightly out of alignment, suggesting that it may have been added as an afterthought.
Provenance: Acquired April 2017 by private collection, Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Site: The woolen mill in the painting is located near Palenville, New York, about a mile from the subjects of at least two other Schafer paintings, Catskill Fall, Catskill Mountains, New York and Autumn on South Lake, Catskill Mountains, New York.
Note: 1. This painting may have been executed between the fall of 1871 and the spring of 1873, a period when Schafer is thought to have been resident on the east coast of the United States before moving to San Francisco. 2. A painting titled Old Mill in the Catskill Mts. was offered as lot 3 on page 3 of the catalog of a 17 November 1885 auction in San Francisco but there is not enough information in that catalog to either include or exclude the possibility that it is this painting. 3. Conservation in 2025 by Western Center for the Conservation of Fine Arts, Denver, Colorado.
Identification: Title from the artist's verso inscription with abbreviations expanded.
In index(es): Title list, cabins, farmhouses, and similar structures, eastern United States scenes
