Description: | Dense brush and broadleaf trees, much taller on the left, line the sides of a dirt road that leads into a dark and forbidding forest. A snag leans against the tallest tree on the left, while another snag is down on the right side. A mountain with two rounded peaks is silhouetted in the center against a clear sky that is tinged with yellow as if at sunset. (From a color photograph.) |
Note: | The 2000 sale catalog reports the date inscription as 1840, which would be inconsistent with the artist's 1839 date of birth. A review led to the conclusion that the last two digits of the date can not be confidently read. The 2001 sale catalog uses the words "signed and dated indistinctly" and does not attempt to decipher the date. |
