| Site: | Castle Rock is located on the Columbia River, east of Portland, Oregon. The geographic feature in the painting was named "Beacon Rock" by Lewis and Clark in 1805, but it was known as "Castle Rock" from 1811 until 1916, when the United States Board of Geolographic Names restored the "Beacon Rock" name. | Description: | The painting shows the riverbank lower right with a group of tall evergreens. In the lower right middle is the large rectangular Castle Rock backlighted by a pink sunset sky reflected on the River to the left. (Description from the collector, October 1998.) |
| Identification: | The Victoria Times on 9 October 1909 carried an advertisement by Stewart Williams & Co. for a Mrs. L. E. Erb at 2641 Douglas Street, which lists 7 or 8 Schafer oil paintings, including one of Castle Rock. It is possible that that is this painting. |
