Site: | Not obviously Mount Shasta--the cone is flat-topped and has small bumps on both sides. Possibly a view from the east. |
Description: | A large, snow-capped stratovolcano rises above a wide, flat valley under a cloudless sky, viewed from a small rise on which there are several trees and an Indian encampment. Two tan tepees stand on a grassy green knoll with several Indians in daily activities; nearer the viewer stand two Indian women on a trail that crosses the front of the painting. To the left is a grove of conifers, with two tall trees reaching to the same height as the top of the mountain and on their right a standing snag. Behind them on the left appears to be a small pond. To the right, somewhat farther away, the trail disappears between two small stands of trees. Wildflowers dot the right foreground. (From a color photograph.) |
Note: | Leonard's Annual Price Index of Art Auctions mentions that there is a provenance. The Butterfield & Butterfield lot listing has not been examined. |
