Site: | Sentinel Rock, Yosemite Valley, California, viewed from the Glacier Point trail, with the Merced river visible in the bottom of the valley at the right. The vantage point is substantially further back from Sentinel Rock than is the E. Muybridge 1872 photograph [Naef, Weston J., Era of Exploration, plate 81]. |
Description: | On the left, a steep cliff drops from a pointed promontory to the bottom of a deep canyon at the right. Another cliff in the hazy distance carries the horizon across to the right edge of the scene. In the foreground, bright white boulders line the trail edge; forest debris litters the trail. The conifers near the trail are quite detailed; those near the canyon bottom are a single brushstroke each. The sky is cloudy. (From the painting, 14 October 1989.) |
