Site: | View across an unidentified sound (presumably the straits of San Juan de Fuca), with the Olympic Mountains in the background. |
Description: | Three Indians make an encampment on the beach beside an inlet on a large body of water. Across the inlet bank in a bright clearing near the right are a white tent with an open fly, a large, brown dugout canoe, a red-scarfed figure standing and a second figure in a red shirt seated next to the tent. A third figure bends over the canoe. Beyond the camp a large rock outcrop forms a point in the water over which waves break. To the right is a backdrop of a conifer forest and behind that forested hills; to the left is a small, rocky mountain with traces of snow; and in the distance are majestic snow-capped mountains under a cloud-filled sky. At the far side of the sound are seen two white sailboats. The foreground is dark with brown boulders on the left and the right. (From the painting 22 July 1998.) |
Note: | This painting is one of a series of Pacific northwest coast and Victoria, British Columbia, all of which depict the same tents and ocean-going dugout canoes. |
Identification: | Descriptive title of unknown origin, from the 1981 sale catalog. The 1991 sale catalog omits the word Washington in the title. The painting viewed at the Christopher Queen Galleries matches the photographs. The 2003 sale catalog uses the alternate title. |
Other title(s): | The Straits of San Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mountains (2003 sale catalog) |
