Provenance: | With Garzoli Gallery, San Francisco; to The Hoover Institution in 1978 (public). |
Site: | The title indicates Mount Baker, Washington, but the profile of the peak does not look at all like Mount Baker--it closely resembles Mount Hood, Oregon. (Compare, e.g., William Keith, Mt. Baker, Washington 1869, owned by the Crocker Art Museum; a photograph is in Harrison, Alfred C. Jr., "The E.B. Crocker Museum", and the several other Mount Hood by Schafer.) |
Description: | A snow-capped mountain with pinkish lower slopes rises in the center against a cloudless blue sky; in front of the mountain is a row of grey foothills. A stream with large boulders and trees on both sides flows out of the foothills directly toward the viewer. A fisherman stands on the right bank of the stream beside a dark log, working on his pole. A small butte is at the right edge in the distance between the trees. Two snags lean out over the river on the right, one leans on the left. The foreground consists of rough and highly colored brushstrokes with very little detail; it does not invite close inspection. (From the painting, 1 September 1989.) |
Note: | The painting hangs on the West wall of the Stauffer Memorial Auditorium of the Hoover Institution, on the Stanford University campus, Palo Alto, California. |
Identification: | Descriptive title of unknown origin, from the records of the Hoover Institution. |
