[photo] Morning in the San Rafael Valley
Photo credit: William K. Dick, 1971
Medium: Oil on canvas.
Size: 20 x 36 in (51 x 91 cm)
Inscription: None apparent in photograph.
Verso: Said to be "Morning in the San Rafael Valley"
Provenance: With Garzoli Gallery, San Francisco, c. 1970.
Reproductions: Early California and Western Art Research/Schafer slide #6 (color, 1971); William K. Dick photo #61 (color, 1971)
Description: A stream with bright edges enters the scene at the bottom right and flows toward the center of the painting into a flat valley. Across the light green valley floor on the right is a low greyish range of hills in the haze under a cloudy blue sky. Dark green broadleaf trees stand at left edge, and in the distance is an olive green tree. Cows stand on the brush-filled right bank. The left lower foreground is filled with green grass disrupted by grey marks, perhaps from erosion. (From a color photograph.)
Identification: Title from reported verso inscription. A painting of the same title and size was sold 18 September 1993 for $4510 by San Rafael Auction Gallery as lot 347 but it was not accompanied by enough information to either include or exclude the possibility that it was the same painting.
In index(es): Title list, pastoral and rural scenes
