Site: | Looking East from the floor of Yosemite Valley, California, toward Sentinel Rock. |
Description: | Two Indian women stand, talking, on a path near the lower center, with Sentinel Rock looming high above. Two logs lie in the right front corner, the trunk of a long-dead tree leans in the left foreground. Groves of pines climb high from the center on both sides of the path. The cliff behind begins a greyish blue near the base, turns to a purplish grey near the top, where it is brightened by the sun on the right. The hazy sky has some indistinct clouds, shading to light blue at the top. (From the painting, 27 December 1989.) |
Note: | The initials "S.F." following the signature suggest that the painting was executed during the period 1880-1886, when Schafer had a studio in San Francisco. |
Identification: | Descriptive title of unknown origin, from the 1990 sale catalog. |
