| Note: | (1) There is no evidence that Schafer ever actually visited Brazil. This painting is probably a composite based on a local river and photographs or sketches of South American locales, perhaps a painting done on commission. (2) Although none of the sale catalogs describe the painting as lined, both the clean white appearance of the back and the neatly trimmed edges and folded corners at the edge of the stretcher bars in the verso photograph suggest that it may be lined. If so, perhaps the verso inscription was transcribed at the time of lining. |
