Painting record FFSd0657

[no photo] [Rainy mountain in Samoa]

Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 20 x 16 in (51 x 41 cm)
Inscription: no inscription
Provenance: In the Coughlan collection of the Saint Mary's College, Moraga, California, by 1985.
Exhibited: Hearst Gallery unidentified exhibition, Moraga, California, #75.2, September 1985
Reproductions: Early California and Western Art Research/Schafer slide #77 (color, 1985)
Attribution: The style is quite unlike that of Schafer, particularly in the brushwork and the uniform level of detail. The Early California and Western Art Research index reports this painting as attributed to either Schafer or to Ransom Holdridge; it points out that there is no evidence that Schafer ever visited Samoa. The attribution to Schafer appears to be questionable.
Description: A dim sharp-pointed peak looms above a lagoon at the left. A jungle stands at the right with a palm tree leaning out over lagoon. A dark cloud fills the upper left sky, with brighter sky below. All planes behind the forest are a uniform fuzzy grey. Branches of the forest are very detailed, while leaves show no evidence of individual brush strokes. (From a color photograph.)
Identification: Title from the exhibition.
