Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 15 x 27 in (38 x 69 cm)

Provenance: With Hunter Gallery , San Francisco, 1975.
Exhibited: Early California and other Old American Paintings, San Mateo, California, 1976.
Reproductions: Early California and Western Art Research/Schafer slide #22 (color, 1975); William K. Dick photo #95 (color, 1975)
Citations: Inventory of American Paintings… record 71068484
Description: Looking across a clearing in the midst of a stand of tall Sequoias, of which the lower trunks of five are visible, with dense forest beyond. A beige foreground contrasts with bright green brush beyond the trees. Two figures stand near the center, talking, while one more sits beside a tree; all three wear bright shirts. In the foreground, two damaged but standing, smaller, trees. (From a color photograph.)
Identification: Descriptive title of unknown origin, used by the Hunter Gallery and the 1976 exhibition, which gave the size as 14 x 28 in. The Early California and Western Art Research slide is of a painting at the Hunter Gallery at the same time that the Hunter Gallery submitted the report to the Inventory of American Paintings…, so the two reports are probably of the same painting, although the Inventory gave a different title. The Early California and Western Art Research index gives the size as 14 x 22. The note on the back of the photograph by William K. Dick identifies the Hunter Gallery offering and gives the size as 28 x 15 (but the photograph is in landscape orientation).
Other title(s): Giant redwoods (Inventory of American Paintings…)
