| Site: | A view out to the open ocean from the North side of the Golden Gate, near San Francisco, California. |
| Description: | Large swells from the sea at the left break against a red rock cliff at the right. Below the cliff are several smaller, jagged rocks; the mast of a wrecked ship lies at an angle below the cliff and other pieces of the wreck have washed in among the rocks. Behind the cliff to the right is a more distant, higher cliff; a seagull is silhouetted against the blue sky above the cliffs. To the left, a two-masted steamship sails along the horizon under a layer of orange clouds. (From a color photograph.) |
| Note: | This painting and South Head of Golden Gate appear to be pendants. |
| Legend: | The Denver, Colorado, owner is said to have acquired this painting, along with six others by Schafer, on a honeymoon trip to California around 1891. |
| Identification: | Both photographs are of the same Denver collection. The Alameda Library photograph, supplied by the current owner, is labeled simply North Head. |
