Description: A view of what appears to be a hillside mining operation. A brown, grassy hill with numerous tree stumps slopes upward to the left; in the distance it is topped with a conifer forest. Part way up the hill is a wooden hut with its door standing ajar, presumably covering the opening to a mine shaft. Immediately below the hut are two small piles of logs, neatly stacked within posts. Crossing the center foreground is a long log (perhaps a hollowed-out sluice), bright beige above and very dark below. Wildflowers dot the grass in the foreground. An old, large stump with red wildflowers growing in it occupies the right front corner. The sky is grey and cloudy. A low range of grey hills is visible in the distance on the right. (From the painting 22 July 1998.)
Identification: The painting listed in the Inventory of American Paintings and described by William K. Dick was on loan to the Bancroft Library of the University of California at Berkeley for many years, but according to the director it was reclaimed by its owner sometime before 1989. Based on the William K. Dick detailed sketch and description of that painting, it is almost certainly the same painting that appeared in the 1990 sale.
