Reproductions: William K. Dick photo #34 (color, 1970); English, Jane and Bonnie Eddy, Mount Shasta's Black Butte, page 20 (color).
Site: A view to the northeast of Mount Shasta past Black Butte from a viewpoint in Strawberry Valley, about four miles west of the town of Mount Shasta (at the time of the painting, known as Sisson), California.
Description: The snow-capped peaks of Mount Shasta stand in the center against a blue sky half filled with clouds abvove a series of much lower, ridges. In the middle distance on the left rises a steep, rocky, brownish mountain (Black Butte); in the center is a green meadow with a small herd of what may be cows, through which flows a stream. The stream approaches the viewer in the center past a number of bushes, and between brownish-grey banks, brightly reflecting the snow of the mountain and the clouds above. The edge of the meadow is ringed with conifers of varying heights, none reaching the sky. (From a color photograph.)
Note: The Black Butte, Shasta in the distance, from Sisson's, California and Morning on Mount Shasta, from Strawberry Valley, California are very similar scenes of Black Butte and Mount Shasta, viewed from the same meadow. Sunset on Mount Shasta from Sissons, California (attributed) is from from Sisson's Hotel in the center of Strawberry Valley, a viewpoint just far enough to the east that Black Butte is not in the picture.
