[photo] [Mount Shasta 3]

Size: unknown (landscape orientation)
Inscription: l/r "F. Schafer", in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand, across the corner, underlined
Reproductions: photograph in Archives of California Art, Frederick Ferdinand Schafer file
Site: Mount Shasta, California, from the South, with Shastina on the left.
Description: The cloud-patched sky is almost indistinguishable from the snow-patched mountain peak which rises above a wide, green valley floor, with a grey-brown gradual ridge on the right. A group of Indians on horseback are entering the valley, headed toward an encampment consisting of four white tepees and a campfire on the far side. Tall conifers on the left reach to the sky against the background of a high ridge in the middle distance. Forest continues along the left side of the valley, beyond and around to the right. A nearby tall dead tree stands alone on the right, just touching the sky while an isolated grove of six conifers stands on the near side of the valley. (From a monochrome photograph.)
Identification: Descriptive title of unknown origin.
In index(es): Title list, Indian encampments as incidental subjects, Mount Shasta and Shastina
