[photo] Morning on Ross Valley Creek
Photo credit: Early California and Western Art Research, 1971
Date: probably undated
Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 30 x 20 in (76 x 51 cm) but see Identification
Inscription: l/r "F. Schafer"
Verso: said to be titled
Provenance: Offered in 1971 by Garzoli Gallery, San Francisco. Offered 25 May 1982 by Butterfield & Butterfield, San Francisco, as lot 208 in sale 3205A (not sold).
Reproductions: Early California and Western Art Research/Schafer slide #7 (color, 1971)
Citations: Butterfield & Butterfield 25 May 1982 sale catalog; William K. Dick notes page 73.
Description: A dramatically shaded view of a forest along a stream that covers the entire canvas, leaving no sky or horizon. Sun lightens a bright yellow-green clearing in the center, in contrast with completely surrounding dark green and brown tones. Boulders along the stream and a log at right are part of a pervasive clutter of the forest floor. (From a color photograph.)
Identification: The Early California and Western Art Research index identifies the slide with both the 1971 Garzoli offering and the 25 May 1982 sale, reporting the size as 36 x 20 in. William K. Dick's notes describe the same painting, seen at Garzoli in 1970, and also reports the size as 36 x 20 in. The only available image is cropped, so it does not help in resolving this difference.
Other title(s): Ross Valley Creek (1982 sale catalog.)
In index(es): Title list, Barbizon-style forest interiors, mountain streams through a forest
