Description: A fisherman casts off a point into a greyish-black river on the left. A broadleaf forest fills the scene on the right; the sky is mostly cloudy on the left. Immediately behind the fisherman is a straight birch tree with almost no branches; behind the tree are bushes and trees with bright red and yellow autumn foliage. There are several boulders on the near shore; a tree has fallen across the rocks near the viewer, and two dark trees stand together in the right foreground, surrounded by brown grass. On the far side of the lake, the trees are only vague outlines. The painting is brightly colored, especially on the left and in the foreground; it is a bit darker on the right. (From the painting, 2 December 1989, at Maxwell Galleries, Ltd., San Francisco.)
Note: The painting is strikingly similar in composition, style, and color to Lake George by John Frederick Kensett. [Novak, Barbara, Nineteenth Century American Painting, page 85.] See also the note for Autumn in the Adorondacks [3].
Identification: Descriptive title of unknown origin, as found at the Maxwell Galleries, Ltd.. The painting was also listed in a catalog of the Kerwin Galleries, Burlingame, California, in 1989. The Early California and Western Art Research slide identifies the Maxwell Galleries, Ltd. showing.
