[no photo] [Pend d'Oreille Indians]

Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 30 x 50 in (76 x 127 cm)

Exhibited: Bank of America branch openings, San Francisco Bay area, 1976-1978
Citations: Inventory of American Paintings…, records 63410001 and 73260756
Description: (From the 1984 Inventory of American Paintings… record) Shows the Hood River and the background of the three ranges of mountains seen from this area. The encampment is on the right of the painting and shows a canoe along with Indians. It was painted at that time of day when the sunset gives the mountain a pink glow on the Northwest side.
Note: See note about possible misplacement of the Pend d'Oreille in the discussion of the alternate title of [Mount Hood from Hood River, Oregon 3]. The Inventory record includes a letter from the proprietor of Old Heritage Antiques to the Museum of Plains Indians which says that Schafer was "known to have been in Oregon and Washington state in 1878".
Identification: The painting was apparently reported to Inventory of American Paintings… in both 1984 (#732…) and 1985 (#634…) but the 1985 report is restricted, making identification difficult; these reports may be of two different paintings. The painting [Mount Hood from Hood River, Oregon 3] has a similar alternate title and is of the same size, but does not depict an encampment; it may be one of the two paintings reported to NMAA.
Other title(s): Pend de Oreille Indians, encampment on Hood river with Mount Hood in background (Inventory of American Paintings…)
