This painting may have been executed between the fall of 1871 and the spring of 1873, a period when Schafer is thought to have been resident on the east coast of the United States before moving to San Francisco. 2.  A painting titled Old Mill in the Catskill Mts. was offered as lot 3 on page 3 of the catalog of a 17 November 1885 auction in San Francisco but there is not enough information in that catalog to either include or exclude the possibility that it is this painting. |
