[photo] [Campfire and Fisherman by Moonlight] (attributed)

Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 14 x 28 in (36 x 71 cm)
Inscription: none
Verso: none
Provenance: Sold 17 July 2016 for $225+18% by Leonard Auction, Inc., Addison, Illinois, as lot 757 in sale #218.
Reproductions: Leonard Auction, Inc. sale catalog
Attribution: Being unsigned, attribution must be by examining characteristics of the painting itself. The composition, style, and palette are quite similar to other moonlight nocturnes by Schafer. The figure in the boat is clumsily drawn, another Schafer characteristic, and the campfire resembles campfires in other Schafer paintings. The verso photograph reveals a canvas, stretcher, and frame of an appropriate age. As best one can tell from the photographs, there is a good chance that the attribution is correct.
Description: From the sale catalog: "Undated, unsigned, depicting a campfire at night with the moon in the background; possibly painted by Frederick Schafer"
Identification: Assigned, descriptive title
In index(es): Title list, fishing scenes, moonlight nocturnes and other scenes showing the moon, paintings probably attributable to Schafer
