[photo] [Indian Encampment 1]
Medium: Oil on canvas, appears to be laid to canvas.
Size: 26 x 18 in (66 x 46 cm)
Inscription: Signed l/r "F Schafer" in the rounded block-letter hand.
Provenance: In private collection by 1915; by descent to private collection, Illinois by 2005; to private collection, Macomb, Illinois, 21 January 2012; offered 25 December 2013 and again 1 April 2014 via eBay by "emporium-adventures", Macomb, Illinois.
Citations: Personal communication
Note: 1. The lack of finish suggests that this is a field sketch rather than a studio painting; the rounded block-letter hand of the signature supports this conjecture. 2. It is likely that this painting was one that appeared in Schafer's 1888 Chicago exhibition of 157 paintings, as reported in (Chicago) The Sunday Inter Ocean, June 3 and 10, 1888.
Legend: May have come from North or South Dakota.
Identification: Assigned, descriptive title
In index(es): Title list, Indian encampments as primary subjects, sketches
