[photo] [Mount Hood, Oregon 2]

Date: probably undated
Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 32 x 43 in (81 x 109 cm)
Inscription: l/l "F. Schafer" in the rounded sketch hand on sketches.
Provenance: With Neal Auction Company, New Orleans, 4-5 October 1997. With Neal Auction Company, New Orleans, 2 December 2006.
Reproductions: 1997 sale catalog lot 187 (monochrome), 2006 sale catalog lot 227 (color)
Attribution: The style is a bit unusual for Schafer. The stratovolcano is unusually detailed, the sky includes detailed clouds, and the foreground is devoid of the usual snags and wildflowers. This may be an oil sketch, though it is unusually large for a sketch.
Description: A snowcovered stratovolcano in the center is viewed through a steep valley with a river bottom at the right. The sky appears to be cloud-filled. The foreground hillside on the left is largely clear, with low brush and rocks and a prominent boulder near the left front. The more distant parts of the valley on both sides are forested. Although a few trees stand on the other side of the foreground clearing, none are particularly prominent. (From a color photograph.)
Note: The size, provided by the auction catalog, is quite unusual.
